A March against Post office closures from Carnon Downs Post office to Playing Place Post office which took place on Saturday 29 March was a great success. In July, Post Office Ltd will announce up to 40 Post office closures in Cornwall.

Terrye Teverson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate and March organiser, said, "Around 70 people turned out in wet and windy conditions to show their support for the Post office network. Many were pensioners and they came from both villages. Two of the staff in the post offices came on the march as well.

"It was great to hear all the car horns and see the waves from passing motorists in support of our campaign.

Terrye commented, "I have also had a meeting with the Cornwall County Council's Chairman Cllr Doris Ansari and Leader David Whalley. They are keen to pursue any avenue that can retain Post offices within a potential One stop shop system in our communities. In fact, this Tuesday a motion is being put to the County Council from Joyce Mepsted, who is also a member of Postwatch, to explore further opportunities of using the post office in conjunction with local government."

In conclusion Terrye said, "Under the Conservatives 2,500 post offices were closed. Under Labour these closures have been accelerated. I understand that the internet and payment of benefits direct have all taken their toll. But these businesses have not been able to be innovative due to restrictions placed on them. I will work to see new ways of placing the Post office at the heart of local service provision."
