TEVERSON SLAMS POST OFFICE PROVISION IN TRURO AS "A JOKE"4.11.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 16th Oct 2009
The recent decision by the Royal Mail not to re-open Kenwyn Post Office in Truro means many of the city's most vulnerable residents are finding it extremely difficult to access vital services claims Terrye Teverson. The former Kenwyn Post Office has been empty for more than year and is available for lease, but local campaigners still hope to see the service re-opened which they say was well used. "This post office was very well used by local people - particularly the elderly." Mrs Teverson explained. "There was plenty of parking outside and it was very easy for disabled people to drop in. There are a number of sheltered housing schemes nearby and it served the whole of the Kenwyn area. The Post Office was a centre of the community. People could it use without having to make the trip into the city centre. It's a joke that the Royal Mail won't listen to local people and consider this as an option." At the time this post office shut it was promised that the Lemon Quay post office and the Main post office would be kept open. Now Lemon Quay has gone and nothing has opened in its place. Mrs Teverson added: "The Post Office has agreed to trial a new service at Trelander Stores which is good but its miles away from this end of Truro. Elderly people could not walk that far!" "I would like to see the new County Council take up the lease on this unit and use it as a one stop shop with postal facilities."
